Film director Billy Wilder asked one of his best friends Charles Eames to look for a sofa bed for his office that would serve as the ideal siesta or short relaxation.
Because "A man of my reputation simply can't afford to have anything resembling a bed in his office," Wilder said.
Charles Eames himself designed this ideal relaxing office chair.
The chair is designed to be large enough to sleep on but narrow enough to prevent long snoozes. Wilder would sleep with his arms folded. As he fell into a deeper sleep, his arms would gently fall to his sides toward the ground, naturally awakening him.
And the Eames Chaise longue was born.
